The difference between Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5 is often subtle to the casual observer, appearing as just another USB-C port in a crowded market. For those who rely on fast data transfer, multiple displays, and high-power charging, however, the upgrade represents a significant leap forward. Both standards utilize the same USB-C form factor to carry data, video, and power, but Thunderbolt 5 doubles the bidirectional data transfer rate. It is capable of allocating 120Gbps in one direction and 40Gbps in the other while delivering up to 240 watts of power delivery.

For users running several 4K displays or complex setups, the new standard offers a tangible improvement. Thunderbolt 5 supports multiple 4K displays at higher refresh rates or certain 8K configurations, whereas Thunderbolt 4 is built to support one 8K display or two 4K displays at 60Hz. A compatible Thunderbolt 5 external SSD, dock or PCIe expansion device can take full advantage of the new standard’s 80Gbps baseline bandwidth, compared to Thunderbolt 4’s 40Gbps. This extra headroom provides data-heavy setups with some breathing room, though file transfer times do not necessarily cut in half due to other internal and external components.

Users should check their specific monitor and operating system specifications before upgrading. While Thunderbolt 5 is backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 4, 3 and USB4 devices, a connection only works at the speed of its slowest component. This means a mixed setup will not see the full performance of Thunderbolt 5, which isn’t meant for casual gaming or light video editing on older rigs.

Apple’s Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable supports up to 240W of power delivery, a substantial increase over the 100W limit of the Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable. High-end gaming laptops can benefit from this added charging headroom, but only if their USB-C ports are designed for it. USB PD 3.1 raises the USB-C ceiling to 240W, with 140W, 180W and 240W versions more commonly available for laptops like the Lenovo Legion 9i Gen 10 and Razer Blade 18.

Cable length and construction also differ between the generations. Apple’s Thunderbolt 4 Pro cables come in 1.8 and 3.0 meters for $129 and $159, respectively, and feature active circuitry to reduce interference. In contrast, the Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable is only 1 meter long and costs $69, but is passive rather than active. Apple does manufacture a one-meter, passive Thunderbolt 4 cable, though it is typically only sold as a packaged accessory with the Apple Studio Display or through other vendors.
