Lam Research, a major supplier of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, plans to spend more than $3 billion over the next five years to expand its engineering and research capabilities.
The Nasdaq-listed company outlined the initiative on Thursday. The investment will fund a multi-site expansion, meaning new labs will be built across its existing research hubs on three continents.
Expansion aims to boost experiment capacity by over 50%
Lam’s current lab network already conducts over 1 million experiments annually. The funding is expected to increase that capacity by more than half. Some facilities focus on foundational research in materials science and mechatronics, a field combining robotics, electronics, and computer engineering, while others develop new technologies for commercial use.
The company serves the world’s largest memory chip producers, including Micron Technology, Samsung Electronics, and SK hynix. Its machines are used in memory chip production, advanced packaging, and other semiconductor components. Lam also competes in fab robotics.
In September, it launched the Vector Teos 3D system. The machine manufactures three-dimensional AI accelerators by stacking chiplets—small, modular semiconductor dies—on top of each other. It produces dielectric gapfill films, thin insulating layers that provide structural support and help dissipate heat in stacked designs.
These films fill microscopic gaps between chiplets, which also contain microbumps. The tiny metal structures, often just a few dozen micrometers wide, enable electrical connections between layers. Lam’s SABRE 3D machine automates microbump production using an electrochemical process. Chips are submerged in a specialized liquid that gives them a negative charge, allowing positively charged metal particles to bond to their surfaces.

AI demand drives revenue growth
The expansion follows Lam’s second-quarter earnings report. Revenue climbed 15% year-over-year to $6.72 billion, surpassing analyst expectations by $50 million. Strong demand for AI chips, which require complex manufacturing processes, fueled the increase.
The company has also advanced in automation. Last year, it introduced a robotic arm to streamline equipment maintenance in semiconductor fabrication plants. Its broader portfolio includes machines that speed up wafer cleaning, a critical step in chip production, and metrology systems that verify accuracy.
The semiconductor industry is experiencing a surge in investment as companies race to meet demand for AI hardware and advanced computing components. Lam’s expansion could help maintain its edge in a competitive market where precision and innovation determine supplier success. If the new labs deliver, they may accelerate next-generation manufacturing techniques, though the timeline remains unclear.
For now, the focus is on scaling existing capabilities. The $3 billion commitment reflects confidence in long-term growth, despite broader tech sector challenges. Success may hinge on how quickly the new facilities turn research into commercial products.
